Star Formation: Lessons from Taurus

چکیده

The Taurus molecular cloud complex is the paradigm for quiescent, low-density, isolated star formation. Yet the age distribution of its stellar population indicates that star formation is a rapid and dynamic process, inconsistent with the old picture of magnetically-controlled protostel-lar cloud collapse. Instead, Taurus seems to have formed stars in a manner qualitatively consistent with the rapid cloud formation and dispersal inferred for other, higher-density star-forming regions. I suggest that the Taurus clouds were formed rapidly by the collision of atomic gas streams in the interstellar medium, and that star formation ensued immediately afterward. Proc. of 33rd ESLAB Symp. Comments on Inferences of Star Formation Histories and Birthlines

Palla & Stahler have recently argued that star formation in Taurus and other nearby molecular clouds extends over a period of at least 10 Myr, implying quasi-static cloud evolution and star formation. Their conclusions contradict other recent results indicating that molecular clouds are transient objects and star formation proceeds rapidly. The Palla & Stahler picture implies that most molecula...

B- and A-type Stars in the Taurus-auriga Star Forming Region

We describe the results of a search for early-type stars associated with the Taurus-Auriga molecular cloud complex, a diffuse nearby star-forming region noted as lacking young stars of intermediate and high mass. We investigate several sets of possible O, B and early A spectral class members. The first is a group of stars for which mid-infrared images show bright nebulae, all of which can be as...

v 1 1 0 Ju l 2 00 2 Flows , Fragmentation , and Star Formation . I . Low - mass Stars in Taurus

The remarkably filamentary spatial distribution of young stars in the Taurus molecular cloud has significant implications for understanding low-mass star formation in relatively quiescent conditions. The large scale and regular spacing of the filaments suggests that small-scale turbulence is of limited importance, which could be consistent with driving on large scales by flows which produced th...

The formation and evolution of binary systems - III. Low-mass binaries in the Praesepe cluster

With the aim of investigating the binary population of the 700 Myr old Praesepe cluster, we have observed 149 G and K-type cluster members using adaptive optics. We detected 26 binary systems with an angular separation ranging from less than 0.08 to 3.3 arcsec (15–600 AU). After correcting for detection biases, we derive a binary frequency (BF) in the log P (days) range from 4.4 to 6.9 of 25.3±...

An explanation for the unusual IMF in Taurus

In comparison with other well studied star formation regions, Taurus is unusual in several respects. (i) Its stellar initial mass function (IMF) peaks at relatively high mass (∼ 0.8M⊙), but contains very few stars much more massive than 1M⊙, and is relatively deficient in brown dwarfs. (ii) It has a higher binary fraction, particularly at large separations. (iii) Its core mass function is stron...
